Life Skill Training Program

Building Independence, Confidence, and Quality of Life

At Akshadhaa Foundation, the Life Skill Training Program is a specialized initiative crafted to foster maximum independence and self-reliance among individuals with developmental challenges. Using evidence-based intervention methods, the program equips individuals with the skills necessary to function confidently at home, in school, and in the community. Our goal is to enhance daily living, boost self-esteem, and help each individual live a happier and more meaningful life.

Purpose and Approach

We believe that life skills are the foundation for lifelong independence. From managing basic hygiene to navigating public transport, our program focuses on real-world skills that empower individuals to live with dignity and autonomy.
Each student’s journey is guided by an interdisciplinary team of trained professionals, including therapists, special educators, and life skill trainers. While the seven core areas of life skill development remain consistent, the program is customized to match the student’s age, learning style, and specific goals, ensuring personalized and impactful learning.
In addition to traditional training methods, we incorporate:

Live cooking sessions

Live cooking sessions to teach meal preparation, kitchen safety, and nutrition.

Shopping classes

Shopping classes where students learn to handle money, read product labels, and make choices in real-world store settings.

Customized life skill training tools

Customized life skill training tools designed to align with each learner’s cognitive and physical abilities, helping them retain and apply knowledge more effectively.

Assessment Tools We Use

To accurately identify strengths and support areas, we use two standardized and widely recognized assessments:

Community-Based Skills Assessment (CSA)

Evaluates practical life skills across home, school, and community environments to inform goal-setting and intervention planning.

Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (ABLLS)

Assesses foundational learning, communication, and self-help skills that are essential for both academic and functional growth.

Core Components of the Life Skill Program

Our Life Skill Program is structured around seven key components that lay the foundation for long-term functional independence:

Functional Academic Skills

Practical academics like money handling, time management, and basic math to support everyday decision-making.

Communication Skills

Strengthening verbal, non-verbal, and alternative communication methods for effective daily interactions.

Interpersonal Skills

Enhancing social understanding, emotional regulation, and relationship-building for positive peer and family engagement.

Independent Living Skills

Hands-on training in activities like cooking, dressing, cleaning, and using public services to promote autonomy.

Leisure Skills

Participation in creative, recreational, and cultural activities that support emotional well-being and self-expression.

Pre-Vocational Skills

Early work-readiness training focusing on attention, responsibility, and following instructions—critical for future job settings.

Vocational Skills

Skill-based training in trades or services tailored to each learner’s strengths and interests, with a focus on sustainable employment or entrepreneurship.

Empowering for Life

At Akshadhaa, life skill training is not just a program—it’s a pathway to a dignified, empowered, and fulfilling life. By combining structured learning, real-life simulations like cooking and shopping, and the use of individualized tools, we help learners unlock their true potential and take confident steps toward independent, inclusive living.
